UNIRIO became, in May 2021, an official member of the United Nations Academic Impact. Also known by the acronym Unai, the initiative aims to align higher education and research institutions with the principles of the United Nations.

The three focus groups of the initiative at UNIRIO will be coordinated by professor Celso Sánchez, from the School of Education and the  Environmental Studies Group from el Sur ( Geasur ) and  by professors María Villarreal and Enara Echart Muñoz, from the Graduate Program in Political Science (PPGCP) and from the  International Relations Group and Global South (Grisul).
